Water leakA friend of mine is in a cottage, at the end of the water supply. His neighbour has a leak , in her garden, which my friend thinks is his water supply. Hers, for some reason goes another way round.
We are talking about remote cottage here, no near neighbours.
There is no meter.
His stop cock for the house is by the property.
Who is responsible for repairing the leak?

I think that if the leak is before the stopcock it's the water companies job.

The legal position is that the water company's responsibility ends at the point wehe the supply pipe crosses from the highway onto private land. There's usually a stop tap there.
Where the supply then goes onto supply other properties they are jointly responsible for the bits down stream of their connection. Many old arrangements can be quite bizarre.
However, most water companies now have a policy of fixing leaks free, especiall the first one, if it keeps bursting they may say 'no more' but fot the first they'll do it. I'll have a furtle on the interweb

If it's south west water they're not so generous. they'll stump up £100 towards the repair or £250 to replace the pipe.
