Waxing a hat

I have a lovely suede hat, which I am very fond of, but it's not all that waterproof - it fits well (pretty rare when you have a kids sized head!), and is very comfortable. I also have a stick of beeswax. How do I put the two together to make a more useful hat? Just rub it all over, or warm it up first?

And, yes, I'm still avoiding the housework.......

I would practice on a scrap of spare suede first, wax will darken the hat and make it look 'oily'. THere are modern options, the scotchguard type products work well on suede and I think nicwax does a cleaner and proofer for suede boots that should work, but wax is an option if you don't mind the final effect

Buy a Nikwax proofer spray.

I used Lowa Leather Water Stop spray on my gardening hat. One application two years ago and it's still waterproof.
