Waylaying rabbits for the pot.Which methods of catching a rabbit for the pot assuming that you had the skills would you find acceptable and following on from that, which methods if any wouldn't you find acceptable ?
Forget the nuclear option

shoot, net n priest , (quality ) snare , good dog .
not gin ,mixy , or plough in
spose gas is ok for vermin control but what a waste of dinner
plenty of raptors avoids any excess

I would like to see someone show me legal snaring and a lurcher catch a few before making up my mind.

It can be arranged TD.
I have seen a Panda with a piece of wire stretched strategically across the front of it for bunny knobbling.

I know and when I get some spare time I'll sort something out. It was great to watch and help with ferreting thanks to Pricey and chums and I'd love to learn some more. Anything that keeps suffering down to a minimum is fine by me and it's good to learn what to do if you don't have your super-dooper rifle.

Keep this thread going! According to Hon. Sec of nearby allotment site I've got another 18 months to wait. N.B. this site has a serious bunny problem. What I have leant from you lot is that some of you see this "problem" as an opportunity! I would like to find out how you convert problem to opportunity without guns, lurchers or WMD.

Snaring would probably suit your situation best Oldish Chris but it is a very emotive subject and would probably cause an understandable uproar on site.

Lurcher for preference . I have no experience/knowledge of snares so would not comment on that until I knew more.
That said, they're a cunning lot round here, and I wouldn't have a problem with WMD, machine gun towers etc.
Think I'm turning into Wiley Coyote....

have tied a stout brrom handle to the front of a mini in my younger days and driven close to the edges of the back roads spotting bunnies and then clunking them with broom . went and broke many broom handles ,many a clout from my mom and stopped pocket money as well

Paul Mckenna. Hypnotist. using only the power of suggestion he could "suggest" that a full field of bunnies jump into the back of my truck Failing that I would not mind learning ferreting, would not fancy snaring.

snap cap you could use that land to make a fewquid. turn it into a proper shot to keep rabbits down

Ferret and purse nets
air rifle/.22
shotgun
snare
that's about it by my hands, I like to minimise suffering as much as practical but I'm afraid there aint no holy grail of killing wild animals. The majority die quickly, but some die slow and some get away wounded; it's harsh on the animals but it's a fact that anyone who goes hunting wild quarry accepts at some level.

When my father was a youngun he used to long net. It was never an option when I was younger as there wasn't enough rabbits. But now they are resistant to mixy & on the ascendent again might be an option.
Always wanted to work a lurcher to a lamp but haven't got around to it yet. Used to ferret with nets & guns when I was younger.
Wouldn't use wires as there are to many cats around here & only one of them is mine.

Something else I need to learn ..... but there ain't too many bunnies in this part of Sarf London

The bunnys in sarf London are easy to catch. Just take em out the hutch late at night

Trouble with that is everyone around here seems to have a Staff as a fashion accessory and I nearly lost the fingers of my left hand when I rescued my pup from the jaws of one of those
So if they're using one of those to guard little Johnnys lop-eared I'd rather leave it be

Its not the dog its the owner.
And are you sure they are Staffy's?

Mk 6 will do the job fine , the trouble is that it will also kill anything else that goes down there as well.

Not tried a Fenn for catching rabbits, don't you get quite a bit of bruising and internal bleeding with this method ?

thinking of trying snares myself.
dont like them but i reckon if i check them every few hours then that will reduce the suffering bit.
I hope it does anyway.
Mind you most rabbits around here are riddled with mixie poor things.

Once you get the hang ( sorry for the pun ) of setting snares, with rabbits a good percentage of the rabbits will be dead in the snare fairly quickly.
Its an art that I havent cared to practice for many years but if you are faced with literally hundreds of rabbits it can be a very effective way of controlling them.

if the snare is placed so as the head enters just before a hop along the game trail they often break their neck at the first moment .
get shown is better than books but there are plenty of books as well.
properly set "spring" snares are also a quick kill
beware for poor old puss please if the noose is hand high from the floor it is below pussies head and fairly safe (and that is bunnies head height when dipped for the next hop .
with lots a team effort with a long net will thin them .
i miss not having loads of bunnies locally but it is better for the allottment
