We got crabs!

One of the other allotment holders let us pick some of their crab apples and sloes last weekend. The sloes are in the freezer waiting for more gin.

Considering they said they'd taken enough for themselves, the tree was heaving, and we picked a bagload. Howard works for the CWU, so has had a busy week, which meant that we didn't start tackling the crab apples mountain until Thursday, by which time some were mushy. Still - it's compost.

Even so, we prepped enough to completely stuff a jelly bag and get 2 litres of juice out. If I'd prepped any more I'd have ended up with bowls and sieves all over the house!

Then for the recipe. Requires cloves. No cloves, so used star anise. Worked a treat - will double as a base for sweet & sour sauce if there's any left over for the cheese doorstep sarnies.

"We got crabs" may mean several things.

1. The nasty bit. Not a find people would advertice.

2. The seafood bit. The most likely interpretation. They are plentiful around here and I opened the thread, hoping for a good fishing story.

There's a pub in Essex (just outside Saffron Walden, on the way to Audlry End) that puts a sign saying just that outside during the seafood season Smile
