Weekend forage...A rucksac full of wild apples (sweet, sharp and tasty), and a basket of cherry plums and fairy ring mushrooms. Also gagthered a good sized bunch of watermint. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon walk
Also in evidence lots of fresh growth of cow parsley, some hogweed, and loads of blackberries.

I found some apples on a disused MOD railway cutting in Caldicot. Unfortunately they were inaccesable for someone in shorts and sandals due the bramble, nettles and incline. The only apples I could reach looked like some sort of golden delicous variety, large, yellow, juicy, but tastless. The blackberries were nice though.

Sometimes happens with wildlings, they're very variable.
In defense of the much maligned golden delicious, however, on those occasions when you find some that have actually been left on the tree till they're golden, they can be lovely apples. So often they're harvested green and nasty, which is crying shame.

If only you'd be wearing a pair of stout socks with your sandals...

Just racked off my watermint wine, although it could be minty paint stripper from the first tasting! I think its going to need a good long time in the bottles!

Did make me think of what sort pf gear you need to wear/carry for doing a serious forage. I suppose army suplus clothing or similar would do but you don't want too much stuff that would catch on branches and brambles. A good stick would come in handy. Would step ladders be pusing it?

Thick trousers and, if its cold enough, an old denim, wax or leathercoat work well. Shoes need to be sturdy enough to hold rose thorns out, but I find canvas work well enough for that.
As for sticks, I can normally find one lying somewhere to use, but sometimes an umbrella with a hook handle can be a godsend.
Step ladders are an awful lot to carry!

All I know is, don't go blackberry picking in a net skirt!

I favour long sleeves and long trousers for foraging, prticularly as I often end up off piste - even when there is a path to follow! Also recent reported increases in the uk tick population ( carriers of lyme disease http://www.wadhurst.demon.co.uk/lyme/lyme3.htm

I often combine foraging with running (which probably means I miss a lot) so it's shorts and T-shirts for me!
