Went on an organised Fungus ForayWent on an organised Fungus Foray at the weekend, part of Mum's birthday outing. Beautiful location, part of Gilbert White's properly at Shelbourne, and considering the morning had been decidedly rainy the weather held well for the walk.
The chap who ran it clearly knew his shrooms, but slightly let himself down by being rather unprepared and not very skilled in presenting to a group (started by saying he hadn't got there early enough to scout out the area to see what was there etc, then rambled a bit about several unrelated things and didnt seem to know how to manage a group of mixed ages and abilities). Despite that, we did find half a dozen different species and were taken through the stages in accurately identifying them. All finished up with afternoon tea and a fungus tasting (of things he'd collected elsewhere earlier, so interesting, but not as exciting as if it had included species we'd all identified together)
Still, a very pleasant day, and I'd be very willing to go on further organised forays to get insights into species I don't already feel confident with.

Have they been running 'shroom hunts at that venue for very long?

I believe they have done them in previous years. I'm toying with dropping the organisers a line and suggesting the chap could be helped out by some structured planning of the session. It certainly wasnt a lack of knwledge on his part, just not good at 'teaching', but a lot of that could be so easily fixed with a bit of logistical planning.

That's a shame.
I hope he pointed out all the important danger basics.

To be fair to him, he took a very strong line that a first fungus foray was never about edibility, though that could be discussed as an aside, it was about how to spot and identify different species. So all well as far as that went, but it could have been so much more with a bit of planning and group organisation
