What a day!We were preparing the next field for the cattle to move to today and saw so much amazing wildlife!
I saw a jay, which I've only ever seen down in surrey and up in my mum's woodland in the outback of scotland before.
I very nearly STEPPED on a hare - we got up to it and I thought it was something dead in the grass so I prepared to tip it over with my foot to see what it was, and it sprang up and thundered off! Quite amazing - never been *that* close before...
Likewise the barn owl - it hunted right round the perimeter of our field before making it to our corner and diving down just metres away and scoffing a vole. Then it sat digesting, apparently unconcerned about us, for aaages before we just had to disturb it and get on. I've never seen a wild barn owl so close or for so long.
better than seeing it all on TV!

Must be a day for it - I got strafed by four red kites jumping out of a tree on our walk today. I usually see at least one out, and have had some super views, but never that many or that close. Fabulous!

plenty wildlife is nice ,there are some quite rare critters out there
greatest mass was about a dozen deer ,rarest was some lilac coloured bird the size of a fat starling whose name escapes me at the mo
the mini beasts and invertibrates are varied as well
the birds anounce themselves by call ,many species

It was lovely for me- a nice reminder that the wildlife we are encouraging at Rosewood is something special. Being so close to a hare is not such a new thing but being with someone who was delighted by the sight was very satisfying. That happened before when the FWAG man was here- the owl flew out of its favourite tree just as we were passing and he nearly wet himself with excitement!

Would you mind trying to remember the name of that lilac bird? Could it be an European Roller?

A couple of days ago, I watched a buzzard fend off a crow that was pestering it. Owls, voles, more species of birds than I have names for (including a recent addition, the Fieldfare) and the odd snake. Robins that sit on the edge of the pig bowls and help themselves! Seagulls. And if anyone wants our jays, feel free to take them. In the wind, their call sounds like a hurt piglet

It's not the first time I've seen a hare, I've seen plenty legging it across a field. Didn't see them back in lancs except on the moorland slopes around the foot of pendle hill, but started seeing a lot in lincolnshire on the arable land....never nearly stepped on one though!!!

I must have spent nearly half an hour watching a jay on my allotment the other week - I was sitting in my shed doorway with a cuppa and the jay was at the other end of the plot. I don't think it realised I was there, so I got a cracking view of it.
Last time I saw a barn owl was last year on holiday in Cornwall - the farm we were staying on had a huge field/orchard next to the cabins. Saw a movement out of the corner of my eye and turned round to see a barn owl quartering the field - absolutely breathtaking.

I had a similar experience to your jay one but with a barn owl. I was digging away in the garden once and it came and landed on the fence, 30 feet away. I had to stop and lean on the spade to admire it.
