what cakes are made ofa thought occured to me recently. i try to buy free-range when i buy eggs, but on those rare occasions that i buy ready made cakes, it does not occur to me how it was made. unless it boasts otherwise, i think it almost a certainty that any prebaked cakes we buy from a shop are made using battery eggs.
does it matter? i guess it should. our attempts to change things by avoiding buying battery eggs from a supermarket are all for nothing if the battery farms still have a huge market in selling to the baking industries.
what do others think?

It matters to me, and it is incredibly difficult to avoid battery eggs unless you essentially make everything yourself from scratch. Think ready-made sandwiches, posh pasta, custard products - the list is endless.
I'm not perfect and I get it wrong on occasions, but I just keep on keeping on. Check the ingredients and then make your decision based on knowledge and the constraints of your pocket. But it is difficult.

Yes, it matters to me too. We no longer buy Hellman's mayo, making our own instead. And it's very rare I would buy a cake.

Yes it matters, but you can't beat yourself up over it if you do buy something less than ethical [providing you learn something from it]. You tend to find that if you start tuning into such things you do more preparation from scratch, starting with the basic ingredients, which usually works out cheaper too. It's the same with animal feeds- the only way to really know what goes into your food is to make it yourself & buy from source.

Some shops such as M&S only have free range eggs in all their products. Basically, if something is likely to contain eggs and it doesn't state they're free range then they're going to be factory farmed.
Apart from a few things from M&S we make all our own things that contain eggs.

Its rare I buy a cake as well - especially since we have our own supply of eggs but Hellmans Mayo is now made with Free Range eggs - I bought a jar the other day - I had been buying the much more expensive free range one but I like the flavour of Hellmans better - sad I know

Today we collected 30 battery hens from a factory farm in Lampeter!
The hens are lovely and so innocent. bald behinds all around, and seeing them stretch their wings and walk about is wonderful.
They aren't as bald or as bad looking as I thought, I'm so happy that they aren't in their cages anymore : )

Marks and Spencers use only free-range eggs in their prepared food I think - certainly in a lot of it if not all. Waitrose also huse free-range eggs in a lot of their own-brand prepared food and clearly label this as such.
I can't be sure of cake as I don't buy/eat it, but pasta and quiches and other savoury stuff certainly has a reasonable range in both shops.

this is great information folks. i don't often buy pre-baked cake or mayonaise, but i would like to buy the right stuff when i do. if we ever get a co-op in my town i will certainly shop there. cant see us ever getting an M&S though.

Non free range is an issue for sure. But factory produced cakes also contain a plethora of weird ingredients. FR eggs would be the least of my worries there.
If you can find a local bakery they are often fair better. Ours uses just basic ingredients, but they have a terrible habit of always using marg instead of butter.

well so do i , so there's no difference there. i agree that the cocktail of additives they put in factory made cakes ia worry - one of the reasons i rarely buy them. in fact, the only cakes i buy are rich fruit cakes like xmas cake and the like.

We do have a Co-op infact we have 2! One on Westgate and the other near Yorkshire Street - Its the centre of town that doesn't have a Co-op - We used to have an M&S but it shut down years ago - Although there is one in Lancaster
There is also the Farmers Market on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the United Reformed Church on Broadway and if you are struggling to find Free Range Egg's come round to me and I'll sell you 1/2 a dozen if I have them

i'll hold you to that.
are you sure about the one on regent street? i thought it had closed down. i'd forgotten about the westgate one - i dont often go down that part of town.. it's only a small branch though - not sure what they have.
thanks for the info on that farmers market. i didnt know about that, and its only round the corner.

Well unless its shut down since this morning when I was in it - I don't think it has and the Westgate one isn't that small either - they have plenty of selection including a good range of Fairtrade choccy and wine but not I'm afraid much in the way of free range poultry - Best place for that around here is probably the Butchers in Bare or asking at either of the Butchers in the centre of town - Although the last time I asked they did look at me as if I'd grown another head
Morrisons also isn't bad for choice - It has everything from Freedom Food standard through to top of the range Organic and most of the time its available - the other option being Booths but again you'd need to go to either Torrisholme, Carnforth or Lancaster
Trouble is - its getting more difficult for me to suggest places locally as I'm buying my meat from producers on here - Tonight we've had some of Justme's Pork Chops braised in White Wine and Coriander in the oven - Very delicious they were too.
Tomorrow is likely to be either one of Alison's Chickens or some of the hogget or beef from Rob R I've found lurking at the bottom of my very large freezer

Haven't really bought "shop" cakes or bread since we started a family 36 years ago---but I would be as bothered now by the transfats in bought stuff as the battery eggs . I did notice in Morrisons that thinga are altering---they were selling transfat free treacle tarts, and I think M and S stuff is.
