What do smallholders do with their silage wrap?I only ask because at this time of year we seem to accumulate a ruddy mountain of black plastic wrap and the white nylon mesh underneath from our bales of silage that are delivered.
Previously I've taken it down to the re-cycling centre but they can get a bit funny about farm/business waste so I wondered what else we could do with it. Any thoughts or suggestions anyone?

We store ours with all the feed sacks till we have LOADS. I think you can store for 2 years under the new regs. Its a bit costly to get rid of it all as we never get to the min weight / charge (would take about 4 years I think to get enough). You need a ticket to say where you got rid of it just in case you get an inspection. Taking it to the tip / recycling is a no no. You can get exemptions for the sacks for reuse.

Oh - I didn't know that. Thanks. But does it matter that the wrap is all in bits?

there are loads of rules governing waste and what you do with it. they apply to everyone with a holding number. most "agricultural" holdings would need to apply for a whole host of exemptions.
according to the rules you are not allowed to heap up the silt from ditches along the edge, you are not allowed to use building waste to fill the holes in your drive, you are not allowed to make compost within 250 metres of your dwelling, and so on and so forth, without having applied for the relevant exemptions.
environment agency are the people to talk to regarding obtaining exemptions.

we got rid of all the scrap metal we could find on the site but the man wouldn't take the wire
we have miles and miles of wire
so how do i get rid of it?
and i don't think knitting bags is an option
we have loads of silage bags buried just under the soil here, i pull them up all the time
stacks of them
we personally don't use silage for the horses, preferring hay eve though it can be more expensive but the horses do better on it
i think that the bags have been under the ground since the dawn of time
gonna have to ring the council about exemptions and things i reckon

The EA not the council for exemptions.

ok
i would naturally start with the council as they supposedly take our rubbish
mind you they didn't take our trade waste 2 weeks ago despite 4 phone calls and a promise from them
so
i start with the EA and work from there then.....

Just to clarify.
You could ring the council about the trade waste removal & your metal wire problem. But if you need exemptions (IE reusing bags or ditch scrapings or the other 1000's of things) then thats the EA. Can you not collect all the wire up & take it to the council recycling center? Even though its "trade" waste I bet they will take it as they will get money for it as scrap metal is valuable now.

Taking the idea of it having value further, can you find a local scrap metal dealer who might even pay you for it?

Having seen soemone who 'filled a dip' with several tons of waste I can undersatand why this is policed.

I take mine to the Council Incinerator where (they claim) to bale it up and export it to China to get, er, recycled into plastic things. If I had an incinerator to run, I would not be sending valuable fuel to China... There is a free collection service for old cars, agricultural machinery and fencing wire in Shetland run by the Shetland Amenity Trust, but it can take them up to a year to come and collect old wire (presumably has the lowest scrap value?)

Depends, what sort of wire are we talking about?
