What else can we bulk buy?Following on from the resounding success of the vanilla bulk buy I wondered if there is anything else downsizers use and would be suitable for such a bulkbuy?
I'll happily volunteer to 'go shopping' and sort orders etc if there is anything. I suppose I'm thinking particularly of herbs/spices as they are relatively inexpensive to post.
Any idea's, would this be useful?

Herbs and spices do sound good - but my brain is a bit moribund at the moment ... .
Flour - big savings, but too heavy to post.
Animal feed - ditto.

grains of paradise and other "exotic" peppers, a lot of savings can be made there.

Arvo says what about Hungarian Paprika?
I don't know what that is.

not once you know that almost all cinnamon sold in the supermarkets is actualy cassia- its slightly milder and sweeter than 'real' cinnamon, which is the knobbly bark stuff you get in Oriental supermarkets. The Western palate prefers cassia, but its marketed as cinnamon

Certain seeds are cheaper bought in bulk and packaged in smaller amounts. Things like broad beans, for example, for autumn sowing... Whether we'd save enough money to make that worth while though, I don't know.
If anyone wants to have a look at the wholesale prices and do some sums to see whether ordering, say, broad bean seeds per kg and posting them out to DS members would pay, I'd be interested... Looking at this site here I see that you really can save a few pennies buying that many seed, if you need that many...

I tried to get an allotment society type concession for Downsizer from both Kings and T&M, and while I could usually get the first person on the phone to say yes, when they passed that on up they always found a way to block it. Shame, but if anyone else fancies a go, they might get further than I did, maybe the companies will have softened a bit.

My son can get infinite quantities of paprika and other pepper seeds very cheap: he lives in Hungary.

Does that kind of thing work better with smaller companies? Etty's for example? I'd be interested; but don't have the headspace to do any organisation at the moment.

So, can he explain to me what Hungarian Paprika is, versus other, bog-standard kinds? Because Arvo seems to think that I know, and I'm afraid he'll divorce me if I expose my iggerance.

It's a step up from vanilla pods mind.
(And still seems doable but I have this house to sell. )

I know when I visted Budapest a few years ago you could buy sweet paprika (like ours) and hot paprika (more like chilli powder) in plain red wrappers in all the shops there. They also did strings of those round waxy red peppers (look a bit like plum tomatoes) dried. Got the feeling those were 'hungarian paprika'

When I asked the boy to bring me paprika seeds he turned up with 16 different ones, at least 3 of which were for drying. Paprika is important in Hungarian cooking. I'll ask him what is available as spice (rather than seeds) if people are interested. He's a good cook and engaged to a local girl, so if he doesn't know he can find out.
