What shall we have for tea?Dinner is going to be late tonight, so I have an excuse to make something for old fashioned tea. If I go and dig out the tea pot, what shall I make? I had thought of scones or fruitcake, but fancy something else.

Tea? I'm still (studiously avoiding) cleaning up from breakfast!
How about ginger snap cookies? Nice and autumnal?

I like the sound of ginger snap cookies, or just ginger snaps filled with cream! Mmmm...
Ooh, or on the ginger theme, how about a nice ginger cake?
Or home made French fancies if you have the time!
It is Halloween, how about some spookily decorated fairy cakes?

Mmmm - scones and homemade jam please. Or Scotch pancakes with homemade jam. Or crumpets - oh yes, crumpets! And seed cake.

Gah, we have no butter (well, not enough for cake!) which means going to the shop, which means there will be something that catches my eye while I am there, so I'm unlikely to bake when I get back. Oh well, next time!
I was enjoying plotting Scary Cakes, too. It was challenging with no food colouring, mind, but I was getting there....

Buttered crumpets then?

We may have a repreive. Himself has gone out for something, and will get me some butter on the way back. Might be a little late, but I'm off in search of the teapot!

We have the opposite problem, having had a late filling lunch what to do for a light dinner, I have some white fish defrosted..... it is now 6.30 pm so I need to think of something soon.

Fish pie. If you put in a white sauce with whatever veg you have around (I like leeks, carrots and beans, but anything goes) and top it with mash, you can have it on it's own, so it's a light suppery type meal, rather than a full on dinner.
I still haven't got my butter!

decided on poaching it in milk in the woodstove, with slices of cheese on top and then a breadcrumb topping. It is bloody cold here and it has been snowing all day. Brrrrrrrr.

The butter came too late to make cake yesterday, but today is very definitely a cake sort of day. So I'm starting again, now it's too late for scary cakes. I think lemon and almond cake to have with tea later. Yum.

As a good Yorkshire boy James Martin should know better. It's a nice ginger cake recipe but it's not Yorkshire parkin---that should always have oatmeal in and isn't ready for eating the day it's made.
