Whats this?I bought this about fifteen years ago from a jumble sale when i was about 12 just because i liked the look of it. No idea why i would but it looked interesting.
A fair bit older now and I assume its some type of bobbin for a spinning wheel? Why does it have a slot taken out of the middle part if it is?
Thanks for any responses.

yep, its a bobbin for a weaving shuttle, however, I have a sneaking feeling that the cut out is because its been modified at some point to take a small egg-timer or similar, which has since fallen out. Inteh last 20years maybe, there seem to have been all sorts of strange things made out of old bobbins as mills shut, I once had a pencil stand made of several similar ones cut in half and joined together, and I've seen all sorts of mildly useful bits of household paraphenalia like egg-timers, thermometers and so on installed in the sides of bobbins.
eta, like this! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Egg-Timer-made-from-Old-Mill-Bobbin-RSPCA-Sale_W0QQitemZ280409565777QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Crafts_Sewing_Supplies_MJ?hash=item4149b66a51

Ah right, that explains it perfectly.
Thanks for that. It was the cut out that was confusing me!
My curiosity is now cured.

i think the bobbinholder would have fitted in the swift and the thread unwound through the side hole- difficult to explain in words.
excuse lack of capitals- cat on lap with her chin on my other arm!!
