Where windows is undoubtably better than Linux!By being from a singe vendor there is a much better chance that everything will work together.
On Linux as I'm trying to configure servers in various ways for various purposes there are loads of cases where dependency conflicts occur or processes fight each other
I'd currently trying to stop a security alert system "lfd" from deciding that anything to do with "Plesk" is in need of killing

TSK! and you complain that Virgin don't speak your language! Us mere mortals have no idea what you are on about!

This is where Apple are in the best position. Whilst MS control the Windows codebase, anyone can produce hardware and drivers - OK there are certifications and so on, but you still have third party code in the OS. In contrast Apple have traditionally kept much tighter control over the hardware, one reason why their kit is relatively more expensive.

Also Windows7 comes in a nice box, which is handy for propping up the wonky table you've got your PC on.

Then why does windows file explorer keep dying and taking everything else with it? Why do the word documents my colleagues send to me have to opened in open office and resaved as word documents again before word will open them? A single vendor it might be but they're still not compatible with themselves!
Having said that my hangup with Linux at the moment is trying to understand the multiple sound systems that one can install which are mostly, but not quite, compatible (playback's a doddle, but recording is a pain in the metaphoricals! getting constantly confused with differences between gtk, pulsaudio and hardware channels versus logical channels)

Sound is a horrible mess in Linux. I don't think even the most ardent Linux fanboys would argue that one. Touch wood it may get sorted soonish, as in the next couple of years.

True, but I'd rather have a system which can read it's own files even at the expense of not always recording sound.

I stick with Linux even though currently I can generally not even play sound
Something I'm hoping the new release will sort for me next week.

I've found that sound playback in Linux is as good as Windows, it's only recording that is a bit iffy.

Is there not some neat geek-crafted piece of recording software on a forum somewhere?
I'd ask round, but all the noise boys and girls I know mostly use Macs.
I've found sound playback on Ubuntu to be Ok, but I've never tried recording anything.
I wonder why it's so hard? Or is it equally as tricky as print drivers but fewer people use it so fewer people have applied themselves to the task?

Like all things if a driver likes your sound card you may be okay. If not....
Sound is a mess because there are several competing systems all installed at once and making a hash of working together. No one would design a system that way.

Plesk sucks, don't blame the rest of the system!

It's not just Plesk, which is the issue. Try updating any LTS version of Linux to have some much needed bits and I get you run into complex dependency issue and probably other conflicts.
