Which are the best livestock shows to visit next year?

Looking at what agricultural (livestock/machinery/arable) shows to visit next year as we will be having a bit more "spare" time on our hands. They need to be near to some family if they are far away, giving us time to get to them before going off to the show. Ideally the show also needs to allow for camping.

We've got family (the ones where we feel more comfortable) at: Nr Ludlow, Melksham near to Bath, Lincoln/Cambridge. If the OH can drive then also: Carlisle, somewhere in Berkshire, Isle of Skye, Manchester/Bury/whitefield.

So far I've got:

Smallholders in May
Three counties in June (but is there camping on site or near by??)
Perhaps RWAS but not too sure on that- July.. anything instead?

What else would you recommend?

I also love anything to do with Steam trains, and the OH anything to do with physics, food, whisky and ale... if you know of some good fairs too.

Forgot to add weekend shows are preferred, though if its one that you think is really worth going to then weekdays can be ok.
Though from August shows have to be on weekends... OH will be going into his final year of his PHD so he really wont want to miss days.

Can't recall any camping at the 3 counties, but there's no shortage nearby.

I though that this years smallholders was a little disappointing and over priced. You mustn't forget our beloved Royal Welsh Very Happy

Second Great Yorkshire, competed this year and now our favourite show despite the long haul up!

Bath and west is also good, Three Counties very relaxing.

Where about is the Great Yorkshire show? Which month is it in as well? Why is it so great, i mean like can you give me a review of it?

Nick, can your recommend any of the camp sites near by? Do they all put their prices up because of the show (like when the royal welsh happens)?

Is the three counties too big to see in one day? or do they entertainment on in the night that the public can come see too? If not could be a one day kind of show... though the in-laws be even less impressed being dragged around a show than the OH is.

Can anyone recommend the big arable/machinery one up in stoneleigh (not the Royal)? As that looks rather fun, any idea what its proper name is?

Does bath&west offer camping on-site/nearby?

The Cumberland Show takes the countryside to town on Saturday 17th July 2010. Combining tradition and agriculture with a fresh, modern focus.

The displays of farming, rural life and local products offer Cumbria’s best family day out. The top quality animals on show offer the best exhibiting experience in the region.

PM NeathChris, he does it as an exhibitor. I just pop up from home, I'm afraid. Certainly, can be done in one day, however.

Think i've found camping for three counties, Marlbank inn they do food in the evening too which would be great.
Can you remember how much your ticket cost Nick for this year, as tha't's the only other thing it hasn't got on the website at the moment? I'm guessing around the £10-£20 mark for an adult per day?

Ahh, we already know a good camp site near to Bath and west show (well 30mins away), just found where it is... does it move from by Shepton mallet at all?
Nick

Not a clue, sorry.

How about the West mid in Shrewsbury? That used to be fun, although I haven't been for years. I think it's June.

Burwarton show is a pretty good one - a large one day show, usually first week in August and quite near to Ludlow.

Looks good from the website 5th august its on next year. Can stay with the in-laws for that and be 2 months on from three counties, so not too close together.

the yorkshire show is in july tuesday, wednesday & thursday it is in harrogate and the reason it is so good is its the biggest show with more emphasis on farming than most shows.

Thats our favourite show, it still has a proper country feel to it. There are lots of vintage tractors and steam engine things to look at as well as the livestock. Beware though they sell lots of poultry and ducks, fatal after a few glasses of cider !

Edited to add that my Sister worked at the Royal Cornwall Show this year, she thought it was the best one she has been to but probably a bit too far away.

The burwarton is a very good one day show, been going for years. Three counties Malvern was very good this year and so was the Royal show at Stoneleigh( where we saw Tim Tyne, but as he wouldnt know me from Adam decided not to say hello) but as that was the last proper royal i am not too sure whats happening with next year but i inderstand their might be a smallholder show like they have at Builth wells.
Pel

Sounds like the Burwarton show is a must see. Luckily it will probably be the OH drinking cider, and he isn't into poultry of any sorts... I do like cider though, but probably I best not drink any since i'll be the one driving and we would end up with a few feathery beings. Sounds like there will be enough other interesting things to see to take the MIL along (she is a primary school teacher in a rural area, so probably do her good Laughing )

You should have said hello - he was frightfully bored most of the time. It might have helped his hangover too Rolling Eyes

There is some talk of putting on a smallholder show next summer to replace the Royal.
