Surely a car that's reliable and runs everyday is environmentally unfriendly? After all if you have something dodgy that breaks down often you can't drive the thing and burn fuel.

But strangely ( ) they don't say how "unreliability" was defined.
In reality "unreliability" means failure to start or to get you to the end of the journey.
Squeaky trim may be a nuisance, but it doesn't count as "unreliability" in my eyes - and yet its exactly the sort of thing included in such surveys.
I wonder what the breakdown statistics are like?
Interesting that they believe the used Fiat Punto has "too many troublespots on a car that’s supposed to represent easy ownership" and "Just 40 per cent of owners in the survey definitely recommend it". *link*
The interesting thing to me is that, if the car really is poor - with a variety of problems, that nevertheless 40% of owners (4 out of 10) would STILL *definitely recommend* it.
Personal recommendation from an owner needs to be taken with a much bigger pinch of salt than most people would expect!

Difference between new and second hand I suppose. If you paying thousands for a new car you expect it to be finished and the build to be reliable. My boss's freelander has been back to the dealer to have things tightened up and put back on, one of which impeded it's ability to function as a motorvehicle. Mind you he is an idiot.

The point I was hoping to make was that the difference between "build quality" and "unreliability" is an important one and was being glossed over, if not actually concealed.
One argument in favour of buying 'used' is that the car should have been debugged and the mistakes rectified before it gets to you!

Or they are just teasing you to subscribe so you can get the full report with the spec of the survey, go on, do it, you really want to know...or go to the library.

Or people are so fed up with the car they sell it on.
