grim has been very busy over several days
the water looks clean over a freestone bed after the floods but there are many dead fish each day
the ea know but they will sort a £5000 prosecution later ,maybe

after the event is too late
for twenty years folk have ,more or less ,not killed the river
polluter pays isnt the nub of this ,it may be a scruffy wee river but it was full of life ,the dippers ,fishers and herons thought it ok even if the plastic and cars looked wrong and sometimes i could only score it a 2 for bod
this river was alive now it isnt as far as i can tell
it does flow fast and so will clean but it will take ages for the ecosystem to become as complex as it was on thursday
i wish this hadnt happened

Chalk one up for the bastards.
Then give them something to weep over.
I don't feel sad reading this, I feel glacial anger.

Massive fine is the usual outcome.

up to 10k and costs but that is not a fair response
only harsh can cover the blood money for an ecosystem that has taken 30 years to bring into life
i surveyed this river in 1976 and we ,collectively , have brought it back to life ,someone killed it

the trouble is, the EA have no teeth. the maximum fine is puny compared to the cost of disposing of toxic waste by legitimate means, and the EA have had their funding cut, so they really have their hands full at the moment. new legislation is useless if the agency charged with implementing it do not have the resouces neccesary. the government is too soft on cowboy indudtries - fines aren't enough - any company found guilty of criminal negligence should face compulsory takeover or closure. that's the only way to force them to abide by the law.
