Who was it who criticised the provision of cycle lanes?

Particularly when they contribute as much to road safety as this one does ...

All of 9 metres long, if you use a generous stride.[/img]

There's a hell of a lot of pictures about with completely shite cycle lanes on them.

I think the worst one was on one of the London bridges, a narrow lane down the middle of the bridge, in between 2 narrow bus lanes. I believe a cyclist got killed, crushed on that one.

Cycle lanes are generally not designed by anyone who has been on a bike.

Appalling........why oh why do they bother?....Why not just educate motorists and prosecute those who intimidate or injure cylists through poor awareness or ignorance?

In response to toggle, it was Westminster Bridge and someone was killed within the first week it opened. I tnk it has since been removed (but not 100% sure).

There's a whole website full of them somewhere. Cab linked to it once.

Is it perhaps a stopping area?

Well it's certainly not long enough to get any speed up!

There are so, so many of them... Theres one right down the lane from here that is so full of railings and signs that you can't physically fit a bike on it, theres another thats labelled as two way but which would, if you go in one direction, take you straight out on to the road and into oncoming traffic.

A good collection is here:

The thing to remember is that these lanes aren't designed for the safety or convenience of cyclists. They're often built to get cyclists off the road and out of the way despite the fact that they do nothing to imprive your safety, often moving you on to the more dangerous edge of the road.

Remember, you don't have to use them. The highway code is clear on this; if the lane doesn't improve your safety or if it isn't convenient then use the road. You're entitled to, and if you're going at a decent pace you simply can't do otherwise.
