Wild BoarAnyone know of any deterrents - they are active in the fields around our plot and this morning we found evidence of their digging in the wild meadow bit of our land.....would urine (human) deter the beasts? Apart from a rifle and night sight what, if anything will put them off getting into our plot? (fencing not an option - dry stone walls surround the land. Thanks ......we think they are after the orchid bulbs.

I'm sure you've done the same google hunting as me.
All I can find as suggestions are fencing, fencing, and more fencing. Electric fencing, immunocontraception (!), shooting, trapping and fencing. Sorry.
Could you get away with an electric fence?

Huge dogs and/or guns is the only effective detterent, same problems in Italy.

Seconded - boar slugs and a large dog seem to be the only viable answer.

A wild boar in the right mood could probably do for most dogs.
We have mains electric fencing and it certainly gives a real old zap. A single strand at piggy knee height may keep them at bay. Thankfully, we don't have a wild boar problem in our area. Several strands of electrified wire will keep pigs in but one, may be sufficient to keep them out an area especially if they have less shocking places to go to.

Erected a temporary, chaotic fence last night hung with bits of plastic and other deterrents......no new damage today but the adjacent field is a bit of a mess. Vigilance is all....they come near my veggie plot and....

Get a nice Spanish shotgun and some slugs, or a rifle of reasonable energy, and treat them as another resource. Wild boar salami hanging in the larder, a nice leg of it roasting in the oven. Take one or two a year and they'll more than pay for any damage they do here and there.

Totally agree Brownbear - boar is my favourite meat of all time and the jambon made from them is delicious!
Ian, sorry about your garden.
We're surrounded by wild boar and we keep them out with one strand of electric fencing about 40 cms off the round next to a sheep netting fence.
It usually does the job but when one of our pigs was in season this cheeky little thing managed to get under the wire !

Somebody must have put him up to it. Where there's a will, there's a way.
