WildlifeWhere would the best place in the UK be to live to be surrounded by the most variety of wildlife?

Near a corpse in the open air would be the place. You'd have all sorts from bacteria to buzzards. Wouldn't smell very nice though.

Have you read that novel about that? A love story.

What novel?

Two bodies decaying on a beach (or was it one). I enjoyed it. Just cannot remember what it's called at the moment.
Nope, just checked and I don't seem to have it anymore. It's going to annoy me now until I remember what it's called (and where it's gone).

That reminds me of the film 'A Zed and Two Noughts' (Peter Greenaway)

Depends on what kind of wildlife you're after. A lot of cities now have a quite staggering array of wildlife.
Do you want to see birds, mammals, insects, plants...?

Mammals, and a wide variety of birds.
You been on the pop Cathryn dear

Well... In that case I'd be tempted by Inverness. I know a spot on the coast up there where you can see dolphins pretty much every high tide, you'll usually have a fair chance of seals, saw a pine marten close to there too, and of course there are some fab birds of prey up there as well as some great seabird life.

nope. Veg plot started it.
And Cab, you get all those around here (go on Penny, you know you want to come to Ceredigion. )

We saw loads of bats near Cathryn's too. At least two different species.

True enough, but if you know where you sit you can be within feet of dolphins just North of Aberdeen, simply the best dolphin watching spot in Europe. Although you do have some great wildlife watching around your way.
Given the choice, however, I'd live on the Northumberland coast.

Ah yes also true. I haven't seen a dolphin this year, only a dead porpoise on the beach. I used to watch seals from my sea front office window in Aberystwyth, haven't noticed any recently (but I've moved offices). They are still there, some anyway but further out or on the more remote beaches.

I once saw a pilot whale from the sea front at Aber. But 'twas a long time ago.

Dolphins often kill porpoises.

That's the sort of place... and yes Cathryn I do want to come there too

We have, in the near vicinity, one of Europe's best sea bird colonies, seals, sharks (a bit further down the coast apparently...) buzzards, sparrowhawks (in the garden yesterday...), many songbirds, hares, foxes, badgers, red squirrels, stoats, deer (roe and red) as well as stunning countryside.
Where do we live? The Northumberland coast! We can almost see the Farne Islands from our garden...
I'm off now, before I start sounding like the tourist board....

Okay, now I'm jealous
Where are you, near to Bamburgh, North Sunderland...?

We're about 12 miles south of Bamburgh but we live on a hill so we can see a long way up the coast to the east and, after a short walk to the top of the hill, we can see the Cheviots to the west.
I love it, and never forget how lucky I am to live here

hedgepig: I'm just butting in here to say how much I love your avatar! Sadly hedgehogs are rare around here, mainly I suspect because we have too many badgers.
Plenty of wildlife here as well: I frequently follow hares along the road.

Thanks mochyn - it was shamelessly nicked from somewhere on the internet.
Sadly, most of the hedgepigs I see around here are rather flat ...

Oh, so that puts you uphill from Alnwick? There are few places more beautiful, you're in a really gorgeous area.
