Wine bookI just bought First steps in winemaking by C. J. J. Berry for £1 in a second hand shop. Is it a good buy, or is it a quid I won't see again in a hurry? Does anybody have any experience with it?

It is my bible! The only wine book you'll ever need. Every recipe I've tried has worked (though I won't be doing 'peapod' again for a while).
I've had to go elsewhere (mostly the net) for liquers - though the advocaat in the back is recommended.
Mine's 1981, but doesn't appear to have been updated from its first printing, which means lots of brilliant groovy and not-so-groovy pix.
Happy brewing.

I especially appreciate the modestly dressed, smiling blonds.

My Dad bought a copy back in the 1960s, but my brother soon pinched it and became the family wine maker . I think he's only got one other wine-making book, and that's mainly about growing grapes for wine in the UK.

Mine is from 1979.

So what are you going to make first?

No blonds in our two, one's from '82 ( it says nearly 2,000,000 sold) and one's much earlier (it says 1,000,000 sold and is a 4th edition 36th impression but no date) - both from both from 2nd hand shops.
I've used a few recipes and seen them re-printed in other books so I refer to them a fair bit.

I don't know. Probably a vegetable wine. After I have made jam wine from the 30 pounds in my fridge.

My extra fridge. The old one in the end of the hallway. And let's just say that there is a reason why I got 30lb of farm shop jam for free. It is probably safer to store it in the fridge...

Then it was a good buy, wasn't it?

It turned into a very raspberry-smelling farm shop. So I got all the jam that was past Best Before, even those that hadn't started to ferment. But to be on the safe side, I keep them in the fridge.

A raspberry-smelling farm shop sounds rather nice, but as you say, better safe than sick with bad-jam-poisoning.

Still got mine from 1978 - great buy!
So was his Winemaking with Canned & Dried Fruit.

Its a classic. It isn't the biggest collection of recipes, it isn't a must any more (such a lot of info is freely available online), but its still an excellent book. As much as anything else, you can skim your way through it and quickly pick up the most important lessons in wine making.

I spotted a copy in the books for sale section of the library today - only 75p! They also had books on goatkeeping and beekeeping for 50p each, but I managed to restrain myself!
