Wine-making circles / associations

Has anyone ever been a member of something like this ? What was the group like, what happened at meetings, how useful, etc etc. ?

We're intending to go to a meeting down in Lancs next month, and I've signed up for the Scottish Amateur Winemakers e-newsletter, as there's no affiliated group in the region. Just wondering whether it's worth doing.

Also, has anyone ever put their homebrew into a competition, and what was the result ?
