Wiping a hard drive........

I'm selling my old laptop on eBay, I've formatted the HD but I know that this doesn't remove everything and if someone wants to then they can recover personal info etc. Is there anything that I can do to it that would completely wipe it or near enough wipe? I don't really want to take a hammer to it and would much rather sell the laptop with the HD.

There are 'shreading' programs out there that'll write over your files several times making them much harder to recover. I'd try and recover your documents folder and then shread everything in it. Some programs seem better than others but a quick google should find something suitable.

I got paranoid so I've removed the hard drive and re-listed it........

i think that is a wise move. i had my laptop looked at recently and the engineer told me that there is software out there that can recover deleted files from a hard drive.

i would have done the same if i were you. paranoid? no, just sensibly cautious.

Agree it's a wise decision, I've played with some of the free software that'll rescue deleted files and it is quite easy to get them back, even from formatted disks. Useful to rescue files people have deleted by accident but worrying for people who'll selling their old PCs.

I'd never part with a hard drive. When I die, every one I've ever owned will be coming to the crem with me Laughing

I shoot mine. Most of them often are already deaqd but I have killed a few in spite and one or two through cold blooded callousness and one in Reno just to see it die.
