wiring in a switch

OK Im trying to wire in a pull switch in the bathroom but there is a mess of wires and connections.
I have sorted through them and found the supply wire and that is red, black and earth and the red is live. the switch wire is also red black and earth.
My pull switch ahs 3 connections, one called COM on one side or the block and 2 on the otherside marked L1 and L2, no we have tried various combinations and can get the light permenantly on or off but not to get the switch working so my qusetion is what connections do i need to make to get the switch live????
I do have help as I am a compleate numpty when it comes to this but we are all stumped.

If you have to ask you should not be doing it.

No realy its part P (I think) of the building regs. You are allowed to make changes IF skilled enough.

That said you should have

1 live in
1 live out (or more)
neutral ring wires
live switched wire

The lights are wired in a large ring with feeds for the live for the lights.

The second pic in that link shows a good example.

yes but the second pick is a ceiling rose and im doing the switch.
I have got it pretty sorted now, the part that was confusing me was when I took the light off the live supply was wired into that, not the switch and I couldnt work out how that was going to work but have realised the live feed needs to go through the switch before it reaches the light fitting, clear when you work out that simple bit but who ever did it before put the loop wire, the live supply and the switch wire all into the light fitting and only had basically a loose wire going to the switch, no wonder it didnt work.
