WOMAD

25th - 27th July, Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire

http://www.womad.org/

Seems a bit pricey at £125 for the weekend, has anyone been before? Is it worth it?
Barefoot Andrew

I've been to WOMAD five times and it is superb. Great laid-back, family atmosphere with all kinds of music - the discovery of new found things is all part of the joy. Much more civilised and much less rough and tumble than the big ones.

Just what I was hoping! I've sent an email to some friends, see if they fancy it, we've been discussing it for a few years, one of our friends used to go, but hasn't been for a good few years, and outright refuses to do Glastonbury, so I'm sure he'll be up for it Smile

You going this year?
Barefoot Andrew

Not sure yet - mad keen to go, need to assess the finances though.
A.
Fee

Looks like the nicer side of Glastonbury, judging by last years pics on the BBC.

Sort of the Jazz World area, nice.
Barefoot Andrew

See you there then hopefully!
A.
Fee

Do you know, I reckon so! Very Happy
Fee

I want to be there now, need to stop looking at pics...

The Siam tent...

...looks suspiciously like the Acoustic at Glastonbury Laughing

In fact, lots looks like shared stuff, is there some of the same organisers involved I wonder?
Barefoot Andrew

Ahh.. fond memories of being in that tent. It's one of my favourite parts of WOMAD, especially late at night.

Tell you what, another fave part is after the music has ended, retiring to the Tiny Tea Tent for a brandy coffee with Manu Chao playing on their little stereo Laughing

Almost tempted to reach for credit card right now... but common sense prevails and I shall hold fire for a bit longer.

The previous five times I've been were at Rivermead in Reading, so the new venue in Wiltshire will be a whole exciting new experience Very Happy

I really need to stop looking and go and put that soup on!!

I love that feeling at a festival too. The main music's stopped, but the buzz is still going on, nice.

At Glastonbury, we inevitably tend to end up in front of the pyramid (well, way up at the back, on the hill) for the headliners, but on the occasions that Paul and I have gone elsewhere (namely the Acoustic tent) for the headlining acts, we've had such a fab time, and we always say we should do it more, but it's the pull of big names on the Pyramid Rolling Eyes

I think we're going to go to WOMAD, you know Laughing Right, I'm off to make put that soup on and open a bottle of something! And turn Chris de Burgh off, who appears to have come on after Doves on iTunes Laughing

I have CdB's Lady in red on an ancient cassette somewhere Embarassed

As for Doves, you can keep them - they're rubbish! I'd rather listen to Billy Bragg...
A.
Fee

Laughing They only came on after Dr Hook, lots got skipped. Funny because I used to quite like them.

I know, Dr Hook isn't much better, but I love them Embarassed
Fee

Right, we're booked Very Happy Hooops!
Barefoot Andrew

I'll decide within the next week or so - just need to make sure a few more pennies are coming in before spending them Very Happy

I *heart* Dr Hook. Except for the chap who sings the song about how he's going to miss his girlfriend ironing his shirts - he should be shut up in a flat by himself and forced to learn how to keep house.
sean

Dr Hook were originally formed to record a song about STDs (or VD as it was known back then). One of the finest song titles ever: Don't give a dose to the one you love most.'
Barefoot Andrew

Where does Dr. Feelgood fit into this scheme?

Well at least that shows some social responsibility. The whinging 'who's going to iron my shirts' chappie makes me spit tacks each time it comes on Smile.
vegplot

I have never been to a music festival and have only seen one band live. Catatonia.
Barefoot Andrew

You have not lived sir!

Mind you, you can listen to the Faenol festival from your place without actually needing tickets...

Well, exactly. He should pull his flippin' socks up and be more supportive. No wonder she left him.
Fee

Tickets have arrived Very Happy Wooop!
Fee

Still on Glasto-buzz, but looking forward to the next festival already Very Happy

Anyone else going?

We can't go to Womad this year but have been several times - it is one of the best festivals and I now prefer it to Glastonbury (too many people at Glastonbury for me now) - you will have a fabulous time Fee Very Happy
Stacey

Womad is like glastonbury used to be about 20 yrs ago - much friendlier and feels safe. Mind you, it's the only festival I've had stuff nicked from Confused
Fee

Can't wait. Very tempted to hire a tipi from Hearthworks for it...though Happytechie is currently saying no Wink
Fee

Just booked tipi hire Very Happy

La, la, la...
Fee

Nobody else going to WOMAD this weekend?

We go tomorrow night, I might be starting to get excited now.
Barefoot Andrew

Have an absolutely fab time - it's a wonderful festival. I personally demand pics galore and the fullest of musical reports! Very Happy
A.
gil

Hope you have a grand time of it, and chill out !
Fee

I shall make sure I take lots and lots of pics, and make sure I have a stop off at the Tiny Tea Tent one evening on the way back to the tent, just for you BA Wink

I've just been listening to Friday night's Radio 3 Womad broadcast on BBC IPlayer - have a listen to Lo Cor de la Plana at about time mark 1.20 onwards ( though the preceding music is brilliant too ) - stunning. On the web it's called polyphonic music but it's close to what we called in school 'rounds' , but taking to such an incredible level that it's a spiritual experience even with only expresso coffee as drug of choice. . and sung in a language that's more obscure and embattled then Welsh Smile
Fee

We're back, and I have one word for you.

WOW

(oh, and I did the entire festival barefoot, Andrew)
Fee

Couldn't resist taking a pic of this:

Fee

Still going through my pictures and videos. And I can't help doing a bit of surfing for artists/groups we didn't know before and really enjoyed.

Some of our musical highlights, were:

- Sharron Shannon & Shane McGowan singing, "Fairytale of New York" (which, I might add, is probably in my top 10 favourite songs)

- Gocoo & Goro - Japanese Taiko drummers, 13 of them! That was last night, and possibly our number 1 highlight, they were astounding, the sound and energy they create doesn't come over as well in the videos. There's plenty on their website to give you a feel though.

- Eddy Grant & Audience singing, "Give me Hope, Jo'anna"

- Sa Dingding - Haunting and beautiful. Saw her main set, then saw her again doing an acoustic set for Gilbert wossits's Radio 3 show, which I believe is going out tonight on Radio 3. Worth a listen to, there were some great artists playing. The stage itself being in the arboretum helped too.

Non-musical highlights:

- Falling to sleep in the dappled shade of a tree in the Arburetum, in the blistering heat yesterday.

- The overall feel of the festival, very chilled and laid back, and much better than Glastonbury in many, many ways Wink

- Living in a tipi.

Any many more highlights I'll remember soon, I'm sure Laughing

It's an ace festival isn't it. I'm definitely going next year.

I shall be glued to the R3 coverage on iplayer for many days I suspect.

We'll see you there! It will be unmissable to us from now on.

Not there Shocked Well, if it was, we didn't recognise it from it's usual coverings and whatnot from Glasto Sad
shopgirlsue

Sounds like you had a good time Very Happy
My 12yr old nephew went on Saturday - his first festival - and camped over night. Don't think he actually got any sleep but had a great time.

Because my sister lives in the area she gets discounted tickets so we might all be going next year.

Japanese drumming is fantastic. I've heard the Kodo drummers and my sister actually got to see them when she was in Japan

Yes - they're great. I've not seen them live, but R3's Late Junction has been playing LCDLP for yonks.
A.

Did you see them, Fee?
I ordered their CD online on Sunday, which arrived today, but I haven't opened the package yet, I'm saving it for the next M3 traffic jam

No Sad We had to miss a few we wanted to see over seeing somebody else, that's the way of festivals though, eh!

At least at WOMAD we got another chance to see some people we didn't get to see with them doing more than one performance, which was great.
