Women have always played a key active role in most family farms, though there does seem to be an increasing number at the forefront of the industry now. At college there were about thirty of us on the agriculture course, and only one female (oh no, wait until sean or Behemoth gets wind of that ). I'd like to see more ethnic groups in British farming too, it's still very white dominated at the moment.

I think that women will be (and are fast becoming) the driving force behind sustainable agriculture, just as they often are in other parts of the world, and in the past. Hopefully nowadays it will be with much more empowerment...
At the winter NOFA (northeast organic farmers association) conference this year, both keynote speakers were women, and a quite large proportion of the younger farmers were women
