Wonky mattress stitchI've just sewn up a cropped cardi which necessitated joining two cast off rows of stockinette stitch end to end (the v shape made by the stitches being joined above each other).
Well the seam is wonky and I can't see what I've done wrong as I don't seem to have caught stitches from outside of either row.
Can any knitters out there make some suggestions as to what went wrong? (I can't do pictures at the moment I'm afraid).
Doesn't look like I'll be wearing this garment out and about
It's rather tragic as I knit quite neatly but I just can't finish a garment professionally.

I'm no expert (and forgive me if the answer is "of course I did!!) but did you block the pieces before you sewed them up? It makes a huge difference to the end product in my limited experience.

This is the way I've joined shoulder seams ever since my grandma taught me - errrr, let's just say a long time ago - Shoulder seams
For shaped/sloped shoulders - instead of casting off row by row the stitches were held on safety pins until the pieces were done, then slipped on to needles and finished in this way
Makes a strong, neat seam that gives without snapping when tops are pulled on and off

Ahhh - I think my problem maybe one of not blocking.
But having said that I like Rowan lady's suggestion of binding off. It's too late for this project but I will try it out on the next one.
Thanks

Have a look at this site. It has easy to follow videos showing different techniques. I've become a bit of a knit addict since I found it and my finished objects are much more polished looking. Now they're hand crafted instead of homemade.

Thanks everyone - I am disguising the seam with some chain stitch in contrasting wool. Once done I will start another jumper with reference to your tips. I will not be beaten!
