Wotcha!the fatbloke is on the south coast!
found the forums linked from one of the homebrewing forums, and thought I'd register.
the main "downsizing" thing I do is home brew, mainly mead, but also country wines (not grape based - the "johnny foreigners" do that better than most of us can, and it's less hassle to jump on a ferry or via the chunnel to keep the cost down), of various wild fruit when in season (or when "berry" fruit is reduced/cheap in the local supermarket).
'S about it for the moment.

Hello fatbloke. I'm about about 8 miles from a bit of the south coast but considerably further from some other bits of it.

Hiya,
Chez and I are big homebrewers. She does the wine. I do the beer.
Might be cribbing a mead recipe off you. Always had disaster with mead!
Welcome to the madhouse!

Hello!!

Bonjour from France. I'm planning to make wine this year - I know, I know, living in France that sounds daft but whilst I can get a decent bottle of plonk for a few euros I really fancy having a go at something like dandelion or fruit wines.

TVM for the welcome.......Thanks to all the welcomes.
Those of you who've settled in France, well lets just say I'm jealous. It's only the language that I'm not a fan of - all those "tenses" they like to use in french, not to forget whether everything's masculine or feminine etc etc. Apart from that, wow, to live close enough to the wonders of Calvados, Armagnac and Bordeaux.
For the home brewers, it's mainly mead and fruit (non-grape) wines that I make. Mead's pretty straight forward, to get a reasonable to quite good one. The only real PITA is that it can take a very, very long time to age (and yes, I'm alluding to years here). So you have to make lot's of small batches and then have somewhere to store them!
The over all thing of "downsizing" ? well it's something I haven't really thought about, but it does seem like an excellent concept. So I suspect I'll have lots of reading to do.
Again, TVM for the welcome.
regards

Hi there, fatbloke, and welcome to Downsizer.
Another home brewer here : non-grape wines, and beer.
The only wine for personal use I've got in fermentation at the mo is 2 gallons of sharon fruit - never made it before, but they were going cheap. Keep intending to go out and tap my birch trees before budburst, but not got round to it yet - too busy to find the drill bit.
