would this be an acceptable small cheap laptop?

Gotta replace my laptop soon, I want a smaller one for carting round with me, beyond that, all I really need is decent internet capability and the ability to muck about with mountains of research notes and shuffle lots of pictures and knitting patterns.
This is the right price, but is it likely to last me around three years or so without me tearing my hair out and coveting newer technology?

It only has 1GB memory and no dedicated graphics memory - you might find that it's a bit slow, particularly if you are doing stuff with pictures ...

fair enough, back to the search engines Smile Thanks

What's your budget, Sally? Or is it one of those 'as little as possible' scenarios?
sally_in_wales

ideally under £300, I do fancy a smaller one as long as its not so small as to be unuseable, and I do have a new shiny 1tb external harddrive to keep all the clobber on, so basic useability is more important than storage capacity I think

What about one of these?

Same amount of memory - but runs Linux, so will go quicker.

If your budget can afford this, then this gets very good reviews

I got my lappie from the PC World/Curries website. I bought a "refurbished" computer. See what you think:

I've got a Dell mini 10 and it's excellent. Comes with Windows XPHome but easily put Linux on it if that's your flavour. Excellent performance.

OH has a eeepc 901 with a solid state
drive...no moving parts so not as much to go wrng, plus if you drop it it'll be less likely to break, and the battery life is longer! Runs linux, has a decent amout of storage, and plays graphic heavy games and videos without a problem... Very Happy

I was looking at them on the Dell Website and the Ubuntu version is all of £11 cheaper, but you don't get the online backup and some other service they throw in with the Windows one... or of course the Microsoftware RRP ~£100.

There's a feature on netbooks in this month's Which? magazine, wot M-J gets delivered. I'll see if I can find it and post what they recommend (although, in my own experience, what Which? tends to rave about isn't always the best).

PC reviews tend to be very erratic. Loads of times you will see comparison reviews that place one machine at the bottom on performance , but when you look at the actual speed difference it is insignificant. The review may also rate things on sound, graphics and drive capacity which may possibly be meaningless for you.

However memory size is pretty much a constant fact of life for almost all use, even under Linux, and 1gb if the graphics use shared memory is a bit on the light side, however I'd argue not terminally so as that machine does use XP. However it is a definite negative point.
