WP software

I'm getting very tired of using Microsoft Word, on grounds that it's unutterable cak which does what it wants to do, and not what you want it to do.

Can anyone recommend a decent open-source programme for word processing? It needs to do footnotes quite well, and quotation paragraphs, but not that bothered about fancy word-wrapping etc.

OpenOffice?

Sounds like open office is the way forward, then.

I've been a bit stuck on Microsoft as I've got the volume installation discs for Windows XP and XP Office, so without the financial incentive, I've been trying to work around all the many, many flaws and bits of defiance built in (incessant reversion to Times New Bloody Roman, turning text italic for no reason and then insisting it's not italic etc).

The Devil take Microsoft.

OpenOffice fourthed. However, it is designed to be mostly like MS Office in behaviour and features, so if it's word processors in general that you're fed up with consider MS Publisher instead.

Just moving over to open office now but there are still times when I think quill and parchment is the way forward.

I don't like OpenOffice, it's as fiddly as Word and can be cantankerous in its own way. I used it for a while but got very frustrated with it and went back to Word when MS brought out Office 2007. Word 2007 is a huge improvement than previous versions but still not ideal.

I rather like the cut down office software vendors often bundle with PC - MS Works. It's simple, does a basic job and is pretty easy to use and less frustrating. I have one copy in an unbroken CD-ROM slip if anyone wants it PM me.

MS Works is brill

Open Office here too - just swapped over.

MS Works drives me to apoplexy. It is designed to make people so frustrated that they go out and buy MS Office.

Agreed - ever tried opening a spreadsheet with more than one workbook in MS "Works"?
