XP reinstalation without system disksI have a friends laptop that I've rescued all the data off for them when XP died. However, I can't recover XP using the supplied system disks.
Is there a way to legally install XP? The only way I can think of is to take it to a PC repair shop, would they have installation disks and does anyone know what they might charge?
The only other idea would be to ask Microsoft but I doubt they'd send out the disks. What do the manufacturers expect people to do when the rescue disks don't rescue?
And yes, if it was mine I'd install Linux but the owners want XP.

Get new disks from the laptop makers. Some charge & some have them as free downloads. If you used a generic xp disk you will still need to find all the drivers for the laptop. Also some laptops have the disks built in to a hidden partition on the HD.

It's a Toshiba and their site says it's too old to get any replacement backup media - which I suspect is just the recovery disk.
I'll try and check for hidden partitions although I don't recall seeing any.
