Yahoo! Just been offered some bees :O)

At last! My tutor has come through for me and I'll be getting a nuc. in the next few days. They're from his own hives so I know they should be reliable and healthy.

It's not the ideal time of year I know, but I'm less interested in honey than I am the welfare of the species & I thought I'd have to wait till the spring to get started so I'm very very happy indeed!

All I have to do now is get them safely installed & nurture them so that they get through the winter. Yay for my tutor!

Cool

Great news!

I have found the whole enterprise fascinating.

We have to open our hive again today - if it stops raining! Hopefully the new queen has started laying.

Will your hive be in your own garden?
hedgehogpie

Yes, I have a nice little spot for them in the garden set out & ready. It's very odd, I feel like an expectant mother and keep fussing about whether they'll have enough of this or that to see them through. Daft I know, I can't help it!
Mrs Baggins

Fantastic news Hedgehogpie! You and I seem to be into beek'ing for pretty much the same reasons! Doesn't matter about the honey, but if you have happy bees - you will get honey. Bonus, eh? Good luck with it all and apologies for not getting back to you re visit. I've had flu of the dreaded piggy variety. It was a blast. Rolling Eyes

Excellent news.

Oh dear Mrs B (hey, that's appropriate!), I'm sorry to hear you've been ill. Hope you're on the mend now though - two of our friends children have both been struck by flu-like lurgy although now the rules have changed it's a bit moot about whether it's oink related or not. No fun either way, but they both recovered well thankfully.

I'm silly-excited and spent the weekend setting up my three hives (I like to look forwards!). All nationals sadly, but once I'm in my stride and a bit more experienced we'll probably move to TBH's as I prefer the ethic behind their design. The lovely thing is how many of our friends have now expressed an interest in taking on some of our bees in the future, meaning I should never be at a lack for space to site them!
Mrs Baggins

That's very akin to my own plan! I have 2 Nationals and was going to build 2 TBHs. That hasn't happened and I want MORE! So I am raiding the piggy bank (no pun intended!) to buy 3 more Nationals and then maybe next year I will build the TBHs I originally wanted!

So glad you are excited. It really is a fab hobby!

We should have a self-build hive party sometime Laughing

Enjoy your bees, I provide a safe glade for the local society bees and love them regardless of them not being mine.

Im still a bit unsure that I could take a hive on as I am not sure how I would react if I got stung after being ill for so long.

I know what you feel about the expectant mum bit, It is such a privaledge to have them that it has to be right.....EXCITING!
Enjoy Very Happy
