Your ideas are needed!!Ok here's the challenge. School fete tomorrow; I'm the announcer (or loudspeaker as it says on a PTA form ) all well and good, done it before, bit of fun, not a problem etc etc..
But - there is a gap in the display programme; the Fijian dancers aren't coming - can you fill in Julie (said to me about half an hour ago)
I've one idea so far but up for suggestions. I'm trying to think how to get some audience participation going so I was going to get some kids to go round finding out answers to questions based on the stalls we have - so find out the name of the rat in Splat the Rat, how much is a burger on the BBQ or similar. But its a bit lame so after more ideas. Team games might be fun. The teachers and PTA are stressed enough so I thought I'd have more joy asking on here. The existing programme already features the school kids singing and dancing and there is a band and a balloon race.
Course if you're in West Oxfordshire tomorrow afternoon and can come and 'do a turn' for us, you'd be very welcome.

Never done Morris. If I lived in England, I might.

Could you give out some clues as the announcer? Give them a clue over the loudspeaker that gets them to a stall, then the stallholder gives them a clue?

that would work, that's the sort of thing I was thinking of. Sending them off to different stalls and getting them to 'report back' to me and then they can use the microphone (kid magnet that thing, daren't leave it unattended )to tell everyone else. Or hiding something on a stall (bean bag?) to collect and bring back.

good plan. Will work on some clues. I think some of the stalls have changed at short notice which is also causing me a head ache (the Slippery Pole isn't there any more - I was looking forward to finding out what that was..... ) but it'll be fine (weather forecast is dismal ) but we'll jolly it along somehow ( I've got to warn against bad parking to avoid upsetting the neighbours ) but it'll go well.(made £1700 last time we had one)

Stand up bingo is a good one. people buy bingo tickets £1 a go. 1/2 goes to prize 1/2 to fund. Then you get everyone to stand up and read out the no.s last one standing wins. Don't know where you'd get the tickets short notice though.

Scavenger hunts are good and are very easy to arrange as the teams do all the work for you.
All you need to do is announce the items the teams need to find & bring back to you for each stage, and organise a prize for the winners.
Could be quite exciting. How much time do you need to fill?

human sheepdog trials.
set out a course like sheepdog trials. Blindfolded person pushes a wheelbarrow (or wears silly outfit/ dribbles or pushes huge ball) - ie - is encumbered in some way.
2nd person stands at the edge with the megaphone and shouts instructions to guide through the obstacles.
do timed runs.

I still say ' The Dance of the Seven Veils' The cold wet weather could be a bonus.

probably about 15 mins or so, but I know that display programmes can over run or generally have little resemblance time wise to the schedule. So we're going for things like a something to put water in or a feather or something? Can do that good plan. have got chocolate as bribery/prizes.

Items beginning with every letter of the alphabet. Every colour for littlies. If you are PAing items belonging to to any category you like, shiny, smooth, sticky, green whatever
I have to source a music system for our fair

we've a PA system (elderly) from someone's Dad - its in the garage and there are panic vibes reaching me about whether the school CD player will couple up with it. But a member of the band is coming in early so between all of us we'll sort it out.
I've got some ideas written down (a midnight thing ) and I'm partly going to get some kids to go and ask things of stallholders as though they are my spies and agents. But I like the idea of collecting things with a letter or texture...thanx

It's quite fine here, other than a short shower earlier, so she might be alright, although she's the other side of Oxford to us.

Lovely here now. Rained a bit this morning. Going to have a beer now as reward for lawn-mowing.

Hm. I've mowed the lawns AND grouted my patio. I must be up for a beer, surely?

I'd have thought so, there's some Stella in the fridge if you want one.

Ordinarily, I'd be there in a flash, but today, I have a case of Hoegaaden with my name on it.

Fair enough, never really got on with Hoegaarden myself. Schneider Hefe Weisse is nice though.

Well we didn't - entirely - the rain stayed off for the first 3/4s of an hour then there was a short shower, then half an hour of sunshine and then it went a bit torrential (our weather station recorded 13.9mm in an hour ) I kept telling them it wasn't raining but not sure they believed me.
The band were great actually, I covered for the missing fijian dancers (had kids running round the field finding out just silly things like did the tea ladies put tea or milk in the cup first; what was the name of the rat on the splat the rat competition, did the camel in the Name the camel competition (a fine construction made of sewn hessian sacks) come here in an eco friendly fashion. Stuff and nonsense really but the kids enjoyed it.
Had an unexpected visit from a fire engine - in that they'd been booked to appear but had told the committee they couldn't come; but turned up anyways (there's a fire engine at the end of the road wanting to come in) and did an inpromptu water hose display which was well liked.
Dunno what the school made yet - but we didn't sell a single DS bag ( did try honest)

early indications from a thank you e-mail just recieved from the PTA is that we made around £1500 which is really, really good from such a wet afternoon.

I'll PM jema to find out where you need to send the money etc and I'm sure I can post some on. Leave it with me - I'll PM you when I know.
