Ziggy went down to Sean's house.......He was looking for a wall to heal...
Some bodger had rendered the outside with waterproofed cement, trapping the damp in the walls & causing it to come out on the inside
First thing to do was strip the modern render off, to let the damp out, then dig a trench below ground level.
Then, with a little help from the dog,(who ate my ear plugs)

This is what we're doing to the side wall of hour albeit very slowly.

We put a perforated land drain pipe in.
And then backfilled it with 10mm shingle to form a french drain.

Will come back in the spring, after the frost, to re render in a breathable lime mortar & limewash.
Many thanks to Sean & Mandy for the tea and cake

Sorry about the earplugs.
Thank you for being speedy, efficient and reasonably priced.

I should think you were lucky to get away with just the ear-plugs, having met the dog

This is true Look at that photo! As if butter wouldn't melt!
Thank you Ziggy! Highly recommended if anyone is needing similar work doing.

Speedy! We've taken 2 years so far and still haven't got around to digging the trench for the French drain.

That's the point really.
Plus, if the back of the house fell down it wouldn't be my fault.

Cute dog.

Lucky you. We have precisely the same problem but fortunately the render is so crumbly that some of the wet gets chance to leak back out. There's always a silver lining.
Poor Milo, you really should consider feeding him.

No worries about the ear plugs, I was more worried about Milo.
Glad you were happy with the work, and nice to meet fellow Downsizers.

Still looking for my lumphammer

I don't think that would be Milo - but do you need us to hunt for it too?
eta - please don't worry about Milo and a pair of ear plugs - really - he can eat a tennis ball in five minutes flat.

I'm liking Milo - he's making me less worried about my (springer) Ralph's eating habits

When BW was of an age to sprinkle wax crayons liberally around the place things were particularly colourful.

Arvo's elderly dog ate a whole tub of coloured grout once with no ill effects other than the obvious.

Are springers worse than Labradors then when it comes to food? I'd quite like a spaniel but I'm not sure I could cope with another mutt that's so obsessed with eating.

We have to shut ours in every few days to make sure she eats. She is far too busy for anything boring like eating. She does chew things though. She brings an interesting collection of stuff up from the beach, odd flip flops, lump of polystyrene, well decayed dog fish the odd crunchy shell.

Milo isn't as bad as some labs I have known. He's never been known to turn food down, but you can leave food out on the counters and he won't steal. He doesn't even chew much - never indoors, but if if something is left outside he tends to assume some things are his toy - but he rarely bothers with Ben's toys.

I can't recall our lab turning anything down but at least now she's grown up she doesn't chew anything. Forage all sorts of wild fruits, windfall apples, 1kg brown sugar yes but no longer chewing. She also doesn't steal really.
I've been used to other dogs not finishing their dog food but happily accepting treats and snaffling pancakes etc, I don't think there's a single recorded incident of a lab turning down food.

If something new, especially if brightly coloured is left anywhere it runs the risk of being played with and chewed! flipflops were a real favourite last year.
foodwise Ralph doesn't usually beg or steal - except he has a thing about peanut butter
