about 2 yrs back the heating went in the fan oven so we have been using the top oven until we"got round to it "

yesterday tt rang a local firm who said £50 callout and £120 for the element

well i was a bit horrified so i popped the back off established it was the element at fault with a multi meter (5 mins) .popped the internal cover off to check the part type ,found that hotpoint sell a near universal element for their cookers (fits 234 models)for £39 inc delivery

it is in the post ,when it arrives it will be in in 5 mins

the callout i can understand but a 400% mark up on parts allowing for them getting a trade price is shocking.

moral check the true cost of parts

I had that the other way with the water heater element - £140 direct from the parts supplier, so, after a sit down and a cup of tea, I priced up a new boiler, which turned out to be £2000+ so I quickly ordered the element.

it seems even modern stuff often has easy fit spares

that this part fits most of their cookers as they intended is good

i wonder which modern household equipment has easy mend built in?i recon that would be a major factor in which i chose after this education by oven.

with power tools it is usually the expensive ones but this is a lower mid range cooker.

it took a while to arrive but £37.98 inc delivery and vat is better than close to £200 for a bloke to pop round and fit one

the only tool required was a medium phillips screwdriver and it took about ten mins

if you can change a plug this is easier (only two clip on terminals and a bunch of cover fixing screws)

a common sense job (manuals are available for parts details etc )that most competent folk could manage.

I've scrapped a couple of cookers and I thought I was being obsessive when I stripped the elements out first...
