I dont think I have a quilting/walking foot for my machine.
I have loads of other feet Ill never use (tucking foot etc).
Cant I just use the foot that is on it?

Of course you can but you'll be amazed at how much easier it is to quilt with a walking foot. It helps all the layers to move through the machine at the same speed - especially useful if you are quilting in long straight lines.

The feed dog is the bit with teeth under your fabric. Normally, you sew with the dog up, so it feeds the fabric; you'd also have the teeth up with a walking foot.

Free-hand quilting, however, is usually done with the feed dog down, so the teeth don't move the fabric, YOU do.

Thanks for that - so in 'normal' sewing the teeth are up? Yes?

Eldest daughter did the whole quilt with the hand cranked Singer and no extra bits. She did find it difficult to prevent the puckering, but pulled all the layers through together. (I don't think the teeth can be turned off in an old Singer.)

Anyway end result was highly satisfactory and she is tickled pink with herself. Must get a photo up of it all done up and bound round the edges.

One good thing however was the arrival of the self-healing mat and the rotary cutter thing just in time for her to trim everything for the bias binding at the end.

Another option is to increase the pressure above to compensate. I haven't tried it as I cannot lower the feed dogs or increase the pressure on my original machine. I'm doing meandering long lines until I can get another machine up and running. My main tip would be to practise on small pieces first of all. Theoretically you can do the quilting without any foot at all or with an embroidery foot on. Make lots of little mats. I'm improving slowly.

Meant to add that you can do this with the screw at the top of your sewing machine (directly above the needle on the top of the machine).
