Not sure if this is the right section , but it is kind of DIY
Yesterday my mower suddenly stopped working, It has a Briggs and Stratton 148cc 450 series engine.
There is a good spark, but even with the carb removed , and a healthy squirt of Easy Start, it wont fire.Does that suggest a problem with the valves? It had been running a bit erraticly and seemed to be heavy on juice , but always started on the first pull of the cord.
Any suggestions to try?
Cheers in advance |

I'm no mower expert, but as I understand it the most common fault with petrol garden equipment is blocked air filters and jets.
Have you stripped and cleaned the carb ? Blown out the jets ?
I wouldn't suspect valves yet - they probably wouldn't make it run erratically, rather they would make it hard to start or burn oil. Is there compression ? |

Coil, HT lead, spark plug, fuel, filter.
Unlikely to be valves as it is actually running - valve problems usually end fairly swiflty and catastrophically. I would start with fuel and filter, and change the plug anyway as that never hurts. |

It sounds like an HT short. The easiest way to check this is at night or somewhere very dark. Look for a tiny blue spark near the plug cap to see if the HT voltage is shorting out directly to the engine casing. However the short could be occurring at any point along the HT lead.
If you have a healthy spark and a squirt of easy start doesn't at least fire the engine an HT short is most likely the problem. The erratic running is possibly a sign of the HT insulation breaking down. A new HT lead and plug cap often solves the problem. |

Looks like the inlet valve is not opening , as it kind of fired with Easy Start sprayed in the spark plug hole. I guess its a new mower, |

It's really really unlikely to be valves. Far more likely to be ignition and fuel. First call, sparkplug - just because it sparks outside when tested, and can sometimes ignite the easy start doesn't mean it's good enough to ignite petrol. So new plug, clean filters and new fuel before you bin it.

Mower now running again
I dismantled the carbaretor (sp) and blew through the jets, which seemed to do the trick |

I wouldn't go that far - just the proverbial jack-of-all-trades. |
