What would you use for the exterior of a timber frame outbuilding? Looks are important, but doesn't matter if it looks more like a house than a chalet, as long as it doesn't look like it's made of pallets - like my last chicken house!

Just that? No draught or damproof membrane? (It's going to have insulation and plasterboard on the inside anyway.)

Oh, I thought it was an exterior coating question.

Yep, a plastic membrane would be useful.

You could try western red cedar (WRC) as the cladding. It doesn't need treatment and you could have it waney edged, square or feather edged. You can buy British WRC, certainly from small producers, but mills are starting to buy it now as well.

Don't know about what should be under that, but if you are going to have it insulated, you may want damp proof membrane, although a bit of air flow probably would be useful.

For a simple wall from the inside out;

Plasterboard
Stud wall with insulation
Moisture barrier
Cladding

More complex walls designed to avoid cold bridging through the studding a layer of rigid insulation board the stud wall and moisture barrier could be used.
