It's not the first time the question has come up. Someone I know on another forum ended up getting hold of seeds via the US in the end.

I'd be interested to hear what the JIC say, after all there's plenty of amateurs out there who do a fair bit of useful research.

If thatching wheat is still grown in the UK,the growers would be a good place to start for obtaining a handful of seed.

There is non grown on this part of the country and finding out any who do is not easy...[/quote

In-fact there are several in the East Midlands, still cut with a Reaper and Binder.

Really?! Um...suppose one have know those 'circles' to know where they are grown and who by.
I have asked from some farmers, beaters, hunters, gamekeepers, shepheds..just anybody that has anything to do with 'land' , that if they have heard or know anything about long wheat being grown..but nobody that I know knows anything about it..
Last year I was after sugar beet...and once I got hold of some..the word got around I ended up with several lots coming from all over the place...

We'll see what happens this time. I ordered some from BES and sent email to JIC..and like I already explained..I have asked from lot of people around here. If I end up with one lot...that is enough.....for now...

Thank for the link!

I shall hold on for now and not ask anymore..or I just might end up more than I bargained for.
I'm not actually after thatching straw as such..but more of bread making wheat that has long straw as 'bonus'.. for few crafts that I might take on...
Hmm...though having thatched roof over log store would look really nice...something that could be little 'practice' piece..
I might have to take over few more allotment plots for that project..

Thank you!
They do sell 'wheat' but don't specify what kind/variety.
I suspect it would be commercial, short straw type.

I've got update to this post... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I mentioned earlier on that I sent email to JI centre...WELLLLLL....
I got email back and as long as I'm happy to delay the sowing until next autumn...they are happy to send me suitable sample
I don't know what variety or even if they send me more than one, or when I will receive the sample...but they did say YES!!!
SO..I'm going to have practice 'round' with my other wheat seeds this spring and leave the tall ones when it is said 'appropriate sowing time'.

YAYYYYY!....thank you for the links!

Excellent. Repay them with photos, a summary of your results, and the offer of returning seed. They won't want it, but it'll make everyone feel good, and the next person will also get given some.

Really pleased. Nice folks, the JIC.

My work here is done.

...actually, thanks for the update as I can see us wishing to experiment with some seeds from there.

It's also surprising how often we bump into people wanting to grow wheat for one reason or another.

Or IBERS , the university here, who have been helping a local mill owner to grow wheat here.
