Done the laptop backlight one. No good as permenant fix but enables you to retrieve your data.

Is it not easier to plug in a monitor?

Yeh that was a thought, but didn't have one to hand. Could have bought a 2nd hand monitor for £10-£30, but laptop was falling apart and destined for the bin anyway. Got the same laptop but in mint condition for £47 on ebay.

And I don't now have a surplus monitor.
