Anyone used this in their homes ? Or is it a gimmicky product? Could you make it yourself ? My daughter has a brick fire place which we did think of covering with mdf and painting, but saw this product on a tv program.

Clay is a common form of internal rendering especially on homes that want or need breathable walls. You'll find plenty of information on the web and there are a number of supplier through the UK.

You don't need a 'special' clay as such but it does need to met some simple criteria.
