If there is some form of indicator ie angle gauge, showing the correct angle of cut, then the grub screw may tighten this in position when the angle of the saw is correctly adjusted

does that make sense ?

There's a lever that releases the saw head to adjust the mitre angle, but according to the gauge it is set at 0 degrees. I'm expecting this to adjust the plane of the blade within the saw head in some way

I think the grub screw is to hold the gauge in place once set....before using the saw for accurate work, use an engineer's square to check the "squareness" of the blade to the table

That is to say, when the saw is in the upright 90° position (according to the gauge/scale) square the blade from the table to ensure the accuracy of the gauge....& adjust & secure with said grub screw

again...I hope this makes sense

That's how I would expect it to work, my set square is at the ready but the slackening off of the grub screw seems to have no effect

Talking of which I drove past a wimpy the other day, thought they'd all gone, didn't realise I could still get a bender in a bun

Have you tried hitting it? Always seemed to work with vertical hold on the TV.

There's one in Barnstaple. It's got waitress service and everything.

Come to think of it the hardware store in town has got those squeezy plastic tomatoes for ketchup in at the moment.

wd40 might get the clamp that is held by the (now loose?)grub screw to move as it should.

resins and dust from cutting can set quite hard as can old oil and wd40 is a good release agent.

leave it to soak for an hour or so and try wiggling/gentle tapping with a bit of wood (avoid bruising the metal so dont use a hammer direct)

a toothbrush can be handy for hard to reach crevices
