I only ask because I don't think I have much space on my laptop but there's a huge list of things on it. I'm sure there must be some I don't need!

You don't need it on your system but some of your applications may require it. If it's on your system it's probably there for a good reason and you must keep it updated (don't ignore those pesky Java update notifications) for best security.

So can I dump it and then see if anything changes for the worse? I can re-install it later, can't I?

I wouldn't advocate doing that. You may be able to but you may also regret it.

Sure! I can look but I'm not that good at working on computers. I use them all day but make no pretentions about knowing how to fix them or make them run better. I'm quite good at destructively taking them apart though.
