Good evening,

My 3 year old HP 6520 copier/printer has stopped working properly. All diagnostic checks and tools options have not cleared the problem, so time to renew. And at £99 3 years ago, it owes me nothing.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good one, and any models to steer clear of please?

I wil be checking Which magazine in the library tomorrow in case they have had any on test recently.

thanks

Do you need colour? We've got a Brother B&W laser printer/copier. Was about a hundred quid & does the job fine. We've got the printer only version at work so they'll stand up to moderately heavy use too.

avoid models that do not allow refilled ink cartridges, you might pay more for the machine but ink can cost more than a very costly thing

avoid models with expensive ink and head combo cartridges

try to get one that has a big black ink if you mostly print text.

avoid epson (personal gripes with two )

canon seem pretty good and less prone to ink blockages than some

if you can afford it a model with seperate colours are good as a few pictures of blue sky or red jumpers can empty one part of an all in one colour cartridge wasting the other colours.

if you print cards or odd sizes take advice as some do a4 paper well but struggle with order forms ,cards etc etc

Probably best to avoid inkjet if you only print occasionally; they seem to waste a lot of ink because of it drying in the heads. My HP colour laser printer has had no problems with occasional use over nine years.

Ah, every couple off days, but then yesterday, 300 sheets in an afternoon.

Maybe I should go laser colour?

If you can afford the initial cost then always go laser.

I pay almost as much for a set of cartridges as I did for the original printer! Check the cost and projected number of sheets per cartridge.

I have never run out of more than one cartridge at a time, which may be relevant if spreading costs is useful.
