Yep, already have that installed and have run it.
This is so annoying as all working fine and fast, then complete freeze. Have to switch off PC then start again!!!

Any other ideas please?

Thanks

It all seems to stem from when you installed ZoneAlarm (what version?) and a search of the net show this software can make the system freeze

https://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html#5.5.062.004

How sure are you that it is totally uninstalled?

I downloaded it from their main site yesterday, so assume up to date version.
Really sure that I have uninstalled, as I had to follow some major instructions, deleting numerous folders found on C drive.

Once? I've seen a few things be 'removed' and reappear to be 'removed' again...

There are two things likely happening 1/ There's part of a nasty failing to coomunicate with another part (incomplete removal, try another anti-virus, etc, scanner?) or 2/ the virus has hooked into a piece of software on the machine and removal has corrupted that software (solution: reinstall that software - which? good question!).
I thought you could get out of anything short of a Blue Screen with NT? Which should allow you to discover which process has stuck...

Never overlook the blindingly obvious! I once cured a "freezing up" Mac by plugging in the mouse securely...

Ok its possible you deleted something you shouldn't, but I associate your freezing as starting after *virus* removal, rather than after installing (or removing) ZoneAlarm, which I understood to be a well-trusted piece of software, and so unlikely to have on *installation* started problems that continued, unchanged, even after removal.

I think you may be heading towards a reinstall of Win2k...

must admit i tried that zone alarm after reading this thread yesterday, after fighting with windows security systems for ages to let me download it - it did me no good at all . Have uninstalled it now myself and am not entirely happy with this pc now. can't put my finger on it but it aint right. clueless myself, but wondering if the problem is still inside one of the restore points. had a virus/spyware once lodged inside a restore point and had to turn it off run all spyware etc and then switch it back on to fix. BE WARNED i am no expert so do not listen to a word i say about computers without a HUGE dose of salt

Read on the net and you will find lots of bad reports on ZoneAlarm, all low level software has the potential to mess systems up Normally because some other bit of software is playing a similar game and a conflict occurs.
I agree it a little unlikely as it has been uninstalled.

So, update, I cannot run ZoneAlarm as always on go slow/freezing.
Do you feel that it is the size of my PC's memory?
I run Windows 2000 service pack 4, on AMD Athlon processor 130MB.
When several programs are open, ie. word & internet & printer, my PC slows down, mouse staggering across screen, before freezing?

Thanks

I don't think memoryy's the problem, although more memory wouldn;t be a bad thing
