Catheryn's thread on using wild garlic in cooking has reminded me that I need to manage the wild garlic I have in my garden better.

I have a small number of wild garlic plants that grow in my vegetable plot. Its not an ideal location, becuase I'm normally actively using the ground when they flower. I would like to transplant them to a shady area at the bottom of the garden. When & how?

Whats the best way to propogate more plants? & when? (from seed or devision of bulbs?)

I'd like to have a big patch of garlic in the shady area of the garden, similar to the woodland glades you sometimes come across.

cheers

I've had no luck with seed and I'd like some divisions from an established clump to try out. We have plenty of dampish shade, so it should take.

Oooh: Cathryn...

We've had no problems germinating it from fresh seed; either collected, sown in a seed tray to over-winter and it'll germinate in the spring or left to self seed and it grows everywhere!

We bought some bulbs a few years back and they arrived in early spring so I'd either move them then it then or in the autumn. I'll be moving some from our veg patch this autumn for the same reason as you James.

If the seeds are really fresh then they do okay, but shifting bulbs around seems to be more reliable. I'd skim off the entire clump they're in, soil and all, in bits if its big, and move it to where you need it.

I wouldn't split the individual bulbs, but most often you'll find lots of small bulbs close together.

Ahh, yes, got you now. Never had a problem doing that.
