We have a desk here which has a damaged top.
I don't know if it is real leather or fake, and I'm not sure it matters, but does anyone know where to get replacement material, and do you have any top tips for fitting it?

Do you want to go with the original look or something different? You could for example explore proper lino, it comes in all sorts of thicknesses and colours these days and might be an interesting alternative?

For real leather, Le Prevo are excellent if you tell them what you need it for

Desk "skivers" are easy enough to get hold of. If the repair is fairly small then restick it with a mix of pva (white) glue & wallpaper paste. It all depends on the extent of the repair needed.

Thanks. It helps to know the proper name for things. They're not cheap though.
Maybe she'll go for the lino idea, she is a vegetarian after all.

Skivers are sheep skin & not cowhide.
A lot of firms in the East End still supply single pieces cheaply enough, as desks are normally skivered in 3 (ish) pieces, depending on their size (depending on what you think is cheap or not.)
Failing all else, look up upholsterers in the yellow pages & see if they can recommend someone. A "leatherer" will usually only supply & lay the skiver for you...at a push he may put a coat of white polish on it (if he does it at his place).Failing that, the upholsterer could stipple & laquer if it's an antique or antique-finish desk.
Hope this helps

A lot? Brick Lane is now almost devoid of leatherworkers, still a couple on Bethnal Green Rd, never been into one though.

We used to use a chap who did odd sizes but his name escapes me.
We did have an excellant chap close to us in W. Sussex, but he will have retired. As I said any decent upholsterer should have something suitable, but a skiver is just that bit more flexible, but a bit too fragile for general upholstery. The alternative is the south coast, Brighton area, but I would still favour the East end
