For the last couple of years I've had quite an absorbing little project on the go, with some Light Sussex that I keep.
Initially, I was lucky enough to get some really good utility birds that hatched from eggs that I bought for £1.50p a dozen.
I had thirteen of them and managed seven pullets. We ate the cockerels but saved one of them to swop with a friend from another forum for an unrelated cockerel and I've gone on from there.

The original pullets proved to be fantastic layers, I was extremely suprised at how good they were.
I'm now at the stage where the second generation from the originals, crossed with the 'Yorkshire' cock are just coming into lay. Only time will tell whether or not these birds will go on to be as good as their mums. Time will tell.

I'm now looking for some co conspirators. I think I know most of you who have Light Sussex on here, although there maybe others and I was hoping that some of you might be interested in exchanging, cocks, hens, eggs and most importantly notes.
I'm not interested in showing the birds at all, my aim is to cultivate their utility side as far as their laying is concerned and if at all possible, try and improve the eating quality of the cockerels.
Easy Peasy really. Any volunteers ?

Nooooo thanks anyway - that means more separate pens. Rest assured though that if all ixworths go exctinct I shall be transferring to light sussex and I will ring you first

hang about, I seem to remember my mother, the heathen, saying she preferred LS to ixworths I'll ask her for you!

Not sure about swopping cocks (oo-er) or hens as I'm a bit far, but I could probably swop eggs and notes. The notes thing might be a bit limited as I don't take any at the moment!
