It gets lost?

Not sure to me honest. If it has no monetary value then I would have thought there'd be no import duty to pay. However, the US is finicky about computers going abroad which don't go through the normal export channels.

It's written down as an asset which is not the same as not being worth quite a bit.

Customs forms have a tick box for gift and for commercial sample. Tick either, and it'll breeze through.

I am VAT registered, so does than mean I'd be able to claim back regardless?

It's the asset value I was meaning. If it's written down as an asset then it's not worth anything on paper but maybe worth a great deal to someone.

I think as far as import taxes & VAT is concerned they will want their cut on the market value (not the balance sheet value).

Yep just checked & I was right

Quote:
.2 Is duty charged on used goods?

Used goods are still liable to the same duty and VAT charges as if they were new. However, their value may vary depending on their age and condition.

I can find a reference to 2% import duty, and VAT, but that seems ludicrously low.

And go from there. It looks like 2.7%.

By the way, luddite, it's not a computer you're importing.

It's an automatic data processing machine. Get with the beat, daddy-o.

Well, he is importing into the EU. And, there's no duty between EU states, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
