I'm not sure really Alison- before we visited I didn't really know you that well and I'd much rather stay with someone with whom I know where I stand than someone I didn't know at all.
In your trade I have met people who do feel very 'false', even though they were perfectly pleasant on the surface and providing you weren't insulting me in the place of 'Good Morning' or launched into a lecture when I returned eating a McDonald's, I would still recommend your business because it is a good product & service. Marmite might be a step too far, though.
Honesty is worth far more to me than pleasantries.

It is funny, as when I started this I really wanted the consumers point of view, as much as the person offering the service, and yet it has turned out that way. |

Well, recently I encountered a thread on a similar forum to this, where the buyer had approached the seller saying that what they had bought did not appear to be what they were told they were buying. Apparently, the buyer had tried to get a response via the personal messaging system but the seller either did not respond or the messaging system was not working. The seller, I thought, became quite rude and I do recall thinking to myself, I shan't ever be buying anything from them. The thread had given me the impression that the seller was contentious and not interested in resolving the issue at hand. |

Well, I hope I've offered the consumers point of view. My point of view as a consumer. |

From a purely consumers point of view I am far more likely to pursue business with someone online who I think is a nice person than someone who I personally find irritating
as others have said this isn't necessarily a matter of differences of opinions but how that opinion is presented |

I wouldn't care if they were rude, either. Would my not buying it stop them being rude? Would they shed bitter tears at my lost business and resolve to mend their ways, and not be rude again?

Its about trust. I can trust and deal with people with whom I disagree, but if someone descends to personal insult I'll likely as not cease trusting them. Theres a clear change in intent of a comment then, and I think it could risk clouding the transaction with doubt. Disagreeing, even quite passionately, on any number of things wouldn't be a problem for me. Not trusting someone would. |

I wouldn't say anything on here I wouldn't be prepared to stand by, so in that regard I don't see my activities on here as a threat to my business. Quite the opposite in fact.

Quite. Another point I've considered is that you may 'lose' business as a result of what you say but, providing your views are essentially 'good' then you will also gain business from what you say. I've definitely been involved in threads on here where, because I've stated by case, I have gained custom, both returning & new, and not saying anything people can 'forget' that you are there. |

Every post you make contains a link, in your signature, to your business. Can't be a bad thing unless the rest of the content of your post is absolutely outrageous |

True, although most people prefer PMs to order through here. I think if you don't post there is a tendancy for people to think either;
a) you're busy enough already/not interested or
b) you've just come on the forum to flog your stuff |

yeh exactly. I dont see anything wrong with having opinions.. I tend to be opinionated.
this is my viewpoint (as a consumer): I see it the same as the way I interact with the owners of my local shop - we have friendly banter etc. The more I know them, the more I am inclined to buy from them, as I grow to like them. If they have completely different opinions on certain subjects, that's ok - many of my friends have different political views etc. but If i saw the shopkeepers being deliberately nasty to someone.. well... that might put me off.
So i guess what I am saying is.. having opinions, even strong convictions is fine. Talking about it is fine, having different opinions to me is fine, being rude and nasty would probably make me hesitate to shop there. |

Of course what really stops one shopping with online traders is when they let you down with delivery times, don't provide the goods, disapear without a trace with your money etc etc
So at least if posts get a bit aereated and even then in mid argument there is no naming and shaming or discussion of past bad deals - they are at least trustworthy to deal with
(I know what I mean, does it make sense to anyone else ? ) |

I think I know what you mean ros. I am always very careful not to use any information I have gained as a trader on an online forum (I think I have slipped up once on DS but it was picked up pretty quickly by either the customer or a mod and I have tried to be extra careful ever since).
I am here as a member of DS and I am also a part of a business, I have considered in the past having 'rosewood' or 'rosewood farms' as a username, but that would give the wrong impression as I am just part of a team, I am not the business (Is this making sense to anyone?) and I am not just here because I have a business. |

By the way, I'd just like to say at this point that everyone who is a carbon-based bipedal life form who eats solid food and breathes oxygen, can get stuffed. Never wanted their business in the first place. |
