Anyone else do it?
Who do you use?
What are the rates like?
Just had a quote from Card Net and ouch 2.4% fee for a credit card transaction. Didnt mind the 45p per debit card as we will be using it for the B&B and most bills are about £60 - £120
then there is the £100 set up fee and the £21.33 a month for the terminal.
Any suggestions? Usually only deal in cheques and direct debits in my business but think card payments will be a bit more likely in the B&B

I resisted the credit card machine for years, as I don't use debit cards myslef.
We are with streamline, and got the best deal through the visit britain englich tourist board membership. |

I made myself a spread sheet with all the different charges and set up costs, then spent a morning on the phone, playing one off against the other, and getting reduced membership to the tourist association, as we were so far into the year. |

After some recent 'problems' with a customer Im happy with cash or a cheque with a valid bankers card. |

Nochex is 2.9% + 20p per transaction
Paypal is 3.4% + 20p per transaction
Nochex is also a British company
Edit: The Paypal rate applies up to £1500 per month, it is the same as Nochex from £1500 to £6000, and less for more than £6000/month

I think it might depend what you're trying to achieve. If your B&B thing is just a way to earn a bit of 2ndary income then maybe you can't justify the set-up and rental charges. If you see it as something that might grow into a bigger part of your income than maybe you can justify it.
When I started my mail-order business I took the view that without card processing I wouldn't really have a business. I'm still with Cardnet several years down the line - I don't think they are the cheapest but they are all much of a muchness like many such things. To date, and touching wood, I've never had any problems with them and that is important to me.
My set-up charge was £250, so that has come down. Quartely rental is £60ish. I've just had a look through the last three months and overall charges per month have been 2.7 - 2.9% of throughput to give you an idea.
My view FWIW is that a lot of people expect to be able to pay by card, in whatever everyday situation, and being able to offer them that payment option can only be good for business. Apart from anything else it would enable you to take reservation deposits for your rooms over the phone. |
